New initiative for the Opus Mare's Tail®

Opus Plus, has linked up with Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University (RGU) as part of a comprehensive research and development programme through the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) scheme.

The two year project will focus on Opus' innovative Mare's Tail technology, which coalesces - or pulls together - small oil droplets found in produced water, into significantly larger sizes so that the droplets can then be separated more efficiently.

It will see the Well Engineering Research Group - a team of multidisciplinary academics and researchers from the university's School of Engineering - provide specialist expertise for the project.

This will involve the employment of an associate, who will be stationed at Opus Plus and given access to the Opus Test Facilities and other resources required to carry out the project. The research will contribute to the associate's M.Phil degree.

The project will be funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and the Scottish Government as well as through financial contributions from Opus.

Glen McLellan, Opus Plus' engineering manager and facilitator of the partnership, says he recognises the benefits the innovative scheme will provide.

He said: "Our Mare's Tail technology has really taken off over the last two years with us selling a number of units to the North Sea, South East Asia, Gulf of Mexico and West African markets.

"The KTP scheme will allow Opus to optimise and advance the technology, build on our expertise and capitalise on market opportunities.

"It will make a substantial contribution to our research and development programme, which seeks to keep Opus at the forefront of technological advancements, allowing us to continue to offer clients the very latest in cutting edge technology."

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership scheme is a UK-wide programme that assists businesses in improving competitiveness and productivity through collaborative projects between UK firms and higher education institutions.
